What is it?

MESOSCALE: Intermediate in scale -- compares large to very small weather systems.
  • Fronts & cyclones [100s to 1000s miles; hours to days]
  • Individual clouds & showers [10s miles; minutes to hours]
MESONET: A dense network of carefully-positioned automated environmental monitoring systems with real-time data collection and dissemination capability.
Look at a typical MesoNet site and the environmental measurements that are planned!

Why is it Needed?

Texas is weather sensitive... weather-related decisions and planning benefit from time-sensitive meteorological data over a widespread area that is not routinely available today.

Mesoscale weather events occur over a smaller scale than generalized forecasts and are consequently harder to predict.  These medium scale events (isolated storms, tornados, microburst, flash floods) present a more significant economic and social impact than generalized weather events.

A state-wide comprehensive network of weather instrumentation will provide insight into current conditions in every area (and every county) of the State and instant access to current weather data and information for citizens, schools, agencies, and industry.
